Bullying At School

Unfortunately we cannot deny the existence of bullying among children. According to the American Psychological Association, forty to eighty percent of school-age children experience bullying at some point during their school careers. Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance according to the Stopbullying Website, A federal government website managed by the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services. Four different type of bullying are physical, verbal, covert, and cyberbullying.Bullying leaves physical and psychological consequences on the victim, bully, and also other children involved. Different kinds of bullying have short term and long term consequences that temporarily and permanently affect the bully and the bullied. There are four basic forms of bullying among the children. The first and most typical kind of bullying is physical bullying; this kind of bullying includes any physical contact like pun ching, hitting, pushing, or any other forms of physical abuse.Taking and destroying other children’s belongings by force is considered a kind of physical bullying. The second kind of bullying is verbal bullying, such as using humiliating names, joking about the person’s parents, religion, gender, or the way that they look. A good example of this kind of bullying is making fun of the way another kid walks, runs, or even talks. The third kind of bullying is covert bullying like spreading rumors or stories about someone else. For example a rumor like a boy in your class is a bed wetter or plays with dolls.Also excluding someone from a group or team, and threatening to such level that the victim does whatever bully request other examples of covert are bullying. The most recent form of bullying is cyber bullying. Cyber Bullying is done by sending messages, pictures, emails, text or any information using electronic devices like computers or cell phones. As a result of short- term and long-term consequences of being bullied the victim will experience immediate physical or mental health issues and more serious problems in the future.The bullying victims have more sleeping difficulty, dropping grades, sadness, low self esteem and headaches. In general, the victims have few or no friends due to their anxiety level and their feeling of isolation. Feeling lonely and sad can have an effect on the victim’s learning abilities as well as school success; the victim becomes afraid of going to school or work. Another result of bullying is that the victim might become violent towards him or her selves and other children, and it is a huge possibility that a lot of school shootings can be related to this issue.In some cases bullying can go on for a long period of time and the victim can have thoughts of suicide and possibly commit a suicide. A recent incident of committing a suicide because of bullying was a thirteen year old girl, who was bullied by her girl fr iends in the school. According to New York Daily News, she committed suicide by jumping off a cement factory tower on September 10, 2013, in Florida. Long-term consequences can be almost as bad for the bully as for the bullied. Bullies are more prone to criminal behavior than others and are more likely to end up using alcohol or drugs in adolescence and as adults.For example while they are kids they may commit shop lifting or drop out of school; also as a grownup they may using a gun to prove their domination on other people, getting involve in physical fights, or doing other violence activities. It is very hard for bullies to deal with other people who are physically stronger. The Bullies cannot accept to be a victim, so they try hard to overcome the stronger opponent and to ignore embarrassment in front of other children by even getting into a big trouble or committing a crime.Also engaging in early sexual activity is another risky behavior of the bully children. The bully’ s desire for power will affect their behavior with their wife and children in the future such as being abusive toward their romantic partners, spouses, or children as adults. However, some of the adult bullies will regret their behavior, and as a result of becoming depressed and weak, they will commit a suicide. Some people think that bullying is a part of childhood, and children will become stronger and learn to stand up for themselves.However, a lot of research shows that bullying in fact can cause negative social, emotional, and academic consequences. The four basic kinds of bullying are physical, verbal, covert, and cyberbullying which all have a profound effect on children’s lives. Depression, anxiety, sadness, and loneliness are some of the negative effects of being bullied. In contrast, drugs and alcohol abuse, criminal convictions, and violent behaviors are some of the negative effects of bully children.The best way to address bullying is to stop it before it starts. If bullying behaviors happen in the school, the bully and the victim’s parents and school officials must meet immediately. They should solve the matter through child adviser and find out the reasons behind the behavior. They are responsible to show the students how important this issue is and what are the consequences of the bullying behavior. Also all parents must educate themselves and their children about the bullying behavior, and even use professional help if it is needed.

As examples, the present leader in consumer electronic industry the â€Å"Samsung Corporation† and the ex-leader of mobile phone industry â€Å"Nokia Corporation† are considered here. What is innovation? Innovation is an important concept in modern strategic management since it has a pervasive influence on the performances of the organisation. It also signifies how well the organisation adapts according to new market trends and the way it responds to its market rivals with superior innovations. Furthermore innovation can be defined as Organisational innovation means the implementation of a new organisational method in the undertaking’s business practices, workplace organisation or external relations. Changes in business practices, workplace organisation or external relations that are based on organisational methods already in use in the undertaking, changes in management strategy, mergers and acquisitions, ceasing to use a process, simple capital replacement or extension, changes resulting purely from changes in factor prices, customisation, regular seasonal and other cyclical changes, trading of new or significantly improved products are not considered innovations. (Trott 2005) Influences of Innovation on organizations Now there are few additional questions which arise. Why does an organisation/business need to be innovative? Is it compulsory? Is it beneficial to the society and the organisation itself? â€Å"Yes† is the answer for all those questions and, same as other major factors the priority should be given to innovation too otherwise organisations don’t survive in the field. Innovation can be a facilitator for the development and success of any organisation. By being innovative in an organisation it does not imply success. Innovation could mean changing the business model and adapting to changes according to the environment to provide better products or services. Types of Innovation In ‘Innovation Management and New Product Development’ book Paul Trott has stated there are seven different types of innovations could be implemented in an organisation. Since the beginning of the Samsung, the innovation has been core factor of its success. The history of Samsung goes back to when Byung-Chull Lee started a small business in Daegu called ‘Samsung’ in 1st of March 1938. It was primarily focused on exporting dried fish, fruits and vegetables to China. From its beginning as a small trading company, Samsung has developed to a world’s largest corporation with industries that including semiconductors, advance technology, building and plant construction, fashion, petrochemical, hotels, medicine, finance and more. Its inventions and discoveries breakthrough products have allowed them to be a forerunner in these fields, continuously pushing the industries forward. (Samsung Sustainability Report 2013) According to Paul Trott’s seven types of innovations Samsung’s innovative approach has developed over the time can be described as follows. Product innovation: How advanced it is technologically either in terms of its production, or its productive processes? Samsung was founded 1938 as a small business which mainly targeted on fish and vegetable exporting. After seven decades it became the world largest consumer electronics manufacturer. Samsung has developed to a world’s largest corporation with industries that including semiconductors, advance technology, building and plant construction, fashion, petrochemical, hotels, medicine, finance and more. Samsung has manufacturing and assembly plants over 80 countries around the world. Samsung has a good reputation in consumer electronic products and recently became famous for its iconic designs of curved displays (4K UHD Curved TVs and Galaxy S6 Edge). Samsung’s new â€Å"Foundry Technological Development Centre† is focused on highly advanced technology development such as microchips, memory cards, solid state drives etc. and its manufacturing plants have excellent manufacturing ability to supply products to the rapidly expanding IT market. It also offers various educational opportunities to its employees, such as legal education, basic environmental awareness and job-specific education to support and make stronger the culture of Samsung. (Samsung 2015) At the end of December, 2014, the total number of shares outstanding of Samsung Corporation is 170,132,764.The numbers of preferred shares outstanding and common shares outstanding are 22,833,427 (13.4%), 147,299,337 (86.6%) and respectively. (Samsung 2014) Production Innovation: (Quality circles, JIT- Just-in-Time Manufacturing, MRPII Manufacturing Resource Planning II) Samsung follows a smart manufacturing procedure which is tried and tested through successful project implementation. Management Innovation: (Managers and its strategic level decision takers have required experience to draw upon) Throughout 2012, Samsung Corporation continued to improve its practice of sustainable management with responsible corporate governance. Additionally, to agree with national and international law and regulations, Samsung also adapted a set of ethical standards and values that guide its work procedures and decision making processes. Furthermore, Fortune Magazine has analysed Samsung’s corporate culture by utilizing the confidence index and listed it under â€Å"The 100 Best Companies to Work For† since 1998. Samsung has spent around $14 billion (Which is more than Icelands GDP) on marketing and promotion of its products and services in 2013, which is the biggest (as a percentage of its total revenue) advertising budget of any company ever. (Gilbert 2013) Also Samsung has been the Chelsea’s official shirt sponsor since 2005, Africa Cup of Nations 2010 in Angola and Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea in 2012. (Daryl 2010) Moreover Samsung’s brand name value is $35 billion and it’s in the 8th place of world’s most valuable brands list. Week Approaches of Samsung The following example shows, how strong cultures of other competitors (Apple and Google) are affected on Samsung’s weak approach to a new operation system. Samsung launched its first smartphone operating system called ‘Bada’, which was fully developed by Samsung in 2009. Samsung officially launched it in late 2010, under the ‘Wave’ brand name which is similar to their Android-powered devices which are branded under the â€Å"Galaxy† name. Samsungs this announcement of new Bada OS was a confusing situation for to some people, but Samsung wanted market it under the slogan of â€Å"smartphones for everyone†. At the beginning, Bada OS achieved huge success and at that time it was above the market share of Windows-Phone OS. Samsung helped to turning considerable amount of mobile users into smartphone owners, and Bada seems to be a big part of that. But after few years, due to its lack of 3rd party application support like Whatsapp, Facebook, Skype†¦ etc. people began to question that, does this Bada OS really a smartphone operating system? In 2012, most of third party developers of Bada, left it due to the dramatic decrement of consumers. In late 2012, Samsung announced that they are abandoning Bada OS and they redirected the project to a new operating system called ‘Tizen’ with collaboration of Intel Corporation. Nokia’s Innovative Approach Nokia’s history goes back to 1865, when Fredrik Idestam started his first wood pulp mill at the place called Tammerkoski in South-western Finland. After few years, he opened his second mill on the banks of the ‘Nokianvirta River’ which inspired the name of his company. After decades of development, In 1967, Nokia took its current form as Nokia Corporation as a result of the merging Nokia AB, Finnish Rubber Works which is a manufacturer of tires, rubber boots, and other rubber products founded in 1898, and Finnish Cable Works Ltd, a manufacturer of power and telephone cables founded in 1912. This new Nokia Corporation had five business fields which are rubber, power generation cable, forestry and electronics. (Nokia 2015) Today, Nokia is mainly focusing on three strong businesses which are Nokia Networks (network infrastructure business) Nokia HERE (location intelligence business) and Nokia Technologies (technology development and intellectual property rights activities). From these businesses, Nokia has around 57,000 employees around the world. Nokia is also a major investor in resource and development, with investment through those three business fields more than EUR 2.5 billion in 2013. (Nokia Corporation 2015) Until 2011, Nokia also was a major participant in the mobile devices manufacturing field. But Nokia refused to adapt Google Android operating system to their devices and since then Nokia began to losing its market share slowly. Finally Nokia announced an agreement with Microsoft in September 2013, whereby it would sell substantially all of its Devices Services business to Microsoft and the transaction was completed on April 25, 2014. (Nokia Corporation 2015) Turning point of Nokia Nokia has been a pioneer in the smartphone market and they introduced smartphone trend to the consumers with its own Symbian Series 60 devices in 2002. For the next five-six years, Symbian phones kept the leadership position in the smartphone market. But in 2007, Apple announced iPhone with full touchscreen and application based operating system which is completely new experience to mobile phone users. With that great innovation, Apple Corporation gave a new definition to a smartphone and how it should be. Nokia failed to respond this new iPhone with their innovation and they preferred to stick with their outdated mobile phone operating system and mobile phone designs. As the years passed, more consumers shifted to iPhone and the Symbian mobile platform aged, when compared to iOS and, later Android operating system. At the same time, the smartphones became the trend and more and more mobile phone users decided to use those Android and Apple smartphones instead of â€Å"feature† phones which only could calling, texting and WAP browsing. Wayne Lam who is a senior analyst at HIS has stated â€Å"In hindsight, Nokia should have responded to the iPhone more quickly. They didn’t make the leap of faith onto Windows Phone until 2011. Now they are suffering from their slow response.† On the other hand, Samsung has progressed quickly into the smartphone market and it had the advantage of working from the beginning. However Nokia had a relatively successful smartphone market and platform therefore Nokia didn’t want to give up the exiting market share. (Chang 2012) Conclusion To sum up, Samsung is one of the top-performing businesses in present, and they have sustained high performances and experiences over many decades, and those can be recognised as their strategic methods that involve contribution in global associations, building the links between the top research centres and the industries with vendors. 99% of strategies of Samsung were successful compared to other rivals. Samsung is fully committed in inventing the technologies of future and results-oriented innovations which uplift the existing technologies. After the tragic downfall of Nokia, it is now slowly rising with the acquisition of Microsoft. The current progress of Nokia has been slow, but steady. Nokia finally overtook Motorola in market share in the third quarter of 2013 In the US and became the fourth-largest smartphone vendor In the US. Finally, these both companies went through a stage when their products and service weren’t successful how ever after new adaptations and modifications of strategies and innovations Samsung and Nokia were able to reach the path of success. Managing Human Capital Collective Bargaining External Factors Introduction:- HRM is very important for every organization. The function of HRM is to cover the several elements like inside and outside of the organization. The HR managers very carefully pay attention on the external environment, because external environment also significantly affect the human resource practices, planning and polices, due to this reason human resource managers are busy for scanning and analysing the external environment, after analysing and scanning the external environment factors the role of human resource managers are to balance these external factors very efficiently with the internal factors to achieve the goals of the organization. Definition:- The HRM involves in four different functions lead, organize, plan and control, such kinds of function may affect the business environment internally and externally. The main external environmental factors which affect the business are economical, technological, political and sociological (Montana charnov, 2000) Technological:- Technology is one of the most dramatic external environmental factor. It changes very quickly. If market changes it overnight the management keep the organization position in flexible and adopt new technology or change in technology for the organization objective. (Karger, 1991) Technology is the external factors. This factor also affect the human resource practices, planning and policy, because in this modern age without technology the organization cannot achieve its strategic goals. In order to develop new products to remain in the competitive, technology is very helpful by using the technology the HRM and organization can store the unlimited data. Role of HRM in Technological:- The human resource managers play very vital role for the implementation of the technology in an organization. The implementation of technology means change in an organization as well as polices. They call the meeting of the employees and tell them about the technology as well as human resource managers also provide training to the employees about the technology which they implement in an organization. The successful HRM in an organization identify and take action when the change in technology. The very essential role of HRM when change in technology they also help to the line manager and give the proper training to the line managers regarding the new technology as well as they also tell that how the line manager will train the new employees and also ensure that new employees have right technological skills. Political Factor:- Political/Governmental factors are also external factors. These factors change when the Government change. The political factors are like trade regulation, minimum wage, tax policies etc. The HRM is bound to adopt this external environment factor. Role of HRM in Political/Government Legislation:- The major role of HRM when any change in political factors, they adopt the political factors and must follow the political factor as above we discussed the some political factors like minimum wage, new legislation etc. The essential role of HRM in any organization in UK that they are bound to give minimum wage to their employees as well as implement the new legislation which the Government settled as well as HRM must follow the laws, rules and regulation when they are recruiting or terminating the employees. The managers also predict that what are the major political changes are coming in the countries, because any change come in this external environment factors it also disturb the human resource manager planning and polices. The political factor is also called the Government Issue/legislation. Economic Factor:- The one of the most important external environment factors is economic factor. This factor affect very effectively to the country as well as the organization, in general this factor includes interest rate, inflation and unemployment. The organization cannot control such kinds of factors. Role of HRM change in Economic Factor:- The main role of HRM when any change comes in economy they take action as soon as possible if the economic factors is not good for the organization the human resource manager take the step of downsizing in staff as well as stop the new recruitment for manage the organization financial stability and stabilize the organization in the economic crisis. When the economic condition of the organization is good the role of human resource managers is totally different they recruit the staff train the staff for achieving the strategic goals of the organization. Socio-Cultural Factor:- The socio-cultural is an external environmental factor. In general environment this is very vital element. The socio-cultural includes social classes, reference groups, language, population, lifestyle, pressure groups, the above mentioned elements directly affect the organization. Role of HRM change in Socio-cultural Factor:- Human resource managers must change their actions according to the desire of the society in which they work with the change of social and customs values and the change in taste human managers need to adopt change as well, for instance the HRM provides good working environment, flexible working hours and children care facility to their employees. Examples of External Factors:- Pizza Hut:- Technology is very important for every organization when any change come in technology the role of every human resource manager is same like the role of Pizza hut human resource manager. When change in technology the role of Pizza hut HRM was they put the organization in to flexible position and adopted the new computer technology and they trained their staff according to the new computer technology, like online ordering, mobile portable card machines. This was the external change which the Pizza hut HRM implemented. (Interview) Iris Trading Company:- When the economy of Pakistan went down the organization economy of Pakistan also went down the iris trading company human resource manager took the step of downsizing to save the organization they stopped the new recruitment and cut off the employees to give them the lump sum amount or golden hand shake before the retirement of the age. (Personal Experience) Tesco:- The British Government introduced the legislation that no company will sell the cigarette to underage. Role of Tesco human resource management they implemented this law in to the organization as well as train their staff according to this Government legislation and Tesco HRM also pay to their employee above the minimum pay per hour which the British Government has settled. (Interview) Primark:- When any change comes in socio-cultural the role of Primark HR is they judge the people attitudes their culture, life style, language and area then recruit the staff regarding the people life style, culture and language in the particular area, which is very beneficial for the customers as well as to the organization to attract the customers. (Interview) Benefits of External Environmental Factors:- As the above discussion there are four external environmental factors which especially influence in every organization as well as their HR department. These four factors are economic, technological, socio-cultural and political. The main advantage of latest technology is HR can easily perform their functions very efficiently, with the help of technology the HR can reduce the cost of employee and provide better result to the organization. If any change comes in economy factor it is also very good for HR the main advantage of economy factor is HR can recruit the staff to achieve the strategic goals of the organization which are very beneficial for the organization as well as if any change also occur in political and socio-cultural this change also give advantages to the human resource managers. if any change in socio-cultural it good for HR to understand the people thinking their life style and the nature of people with the help of this HR may recruit the staff according to the socio-c ultural environment which is good for the organization as well as any change in political give advantage to the HR easily implement the Government polices without any confliction between the HR and the employees. Mathis, 2007) Drawback of External Factors:- Every factor has advantage and disadvantage if any change comes in technological factors it is very difficult for HR to replace the old technology with new once, because this thing affect the HR polices and planning as well as HR managers are addict to use the old technology when they adopt the new technology they will spend more money on technology as well as the staff training which is not good for the organization, same as if change in economy factor then there is also a big cons for HR they will recruit the staff spend money on the training of staff as well as to cut off the staff both condition are unfavourable for the HR planning. The major disadvantage for HRM is when change in political change in this change HRM bound to implement this change within the organization. This external environmental badly affect he HR polices and planning. (Robert L. Mathis, 2007) HRM Practices to Gain the Sustainable Competitive Advantage:- Definition:- Sustainable competitive advantage is the unique position that an organization develops in relation to competitors that allows it to outperform them consistently (Hofer and Schendel, 1978) HRM Practices:- Many organizations use their HR to gain the sustainable competitive advantage, because HR plays very vital role in the hiring of staff. HR practices, theoretically, have little potential for being a source of sustained competitive avantage (Wright et al, 1994) Pfeffer in 1994 has described 16 HR practices that HRM may gain the sustainable competitive advantage through employees as well. But we are discussing 5 more effective practices of HRM for gaining the continuously competitive advantage which are given below. The HR departments of big organizations make the team and give them the task regarding the strategic planning of the organization as well as HR is also design the job for the team. The team work in any organization is very helpful to gain the sustainable competitive advantage. Apple:- Apple is a company deal in electronic like IPHONE, IPAD, and APPLE MAC etc. The HR department of apple is very helpful for the success of apple products, because the HR of apple keep the people in to teams and design the jobs for them round about 10 thousand peoples are working on apple applications, due to this reason no one can steal or copy the apple applications as well as day by day apple is introducing new products in the market which are such a outstanding as well as apple is gaining with the help of this hr practice sustainable competitive advantage. Staffing, Including Recruitment: The one more important HR practices to gain the continuously competitive advantage is staffing, including recruitment, because very important asset for the organization and HR is staff. HR practices include to motivate the staff motivated staff means more productivity for the organization. If the organization needs more staff the HR recruit the excellent and efficient staff train the staff regarding the job and design the job and also motivate new staff, however productive staff is very helpful to gain the sustainable competitive advantage. 2) Toyota:- According to M. Now a days many organizations check the performances of their employees through 360 degree appraising method. To gain the continuously competitive advantage this appraising/performance HR practice very important for any organization. Primark:- The HRM of Primark checks the performance of their employees through 360 degree appraising method once in a year. This HR practice is very beneficial for the company because day by day Primark getting more and more profit as well as Primark has been nominated two time retailer of the Year Award at the World Retail Awards in 2008 and 2009. So we can say that appraising is very important practice of HR to achieve the sustainable competitive advantage. (Interview) Sainsburys:- Sainsburys deals in all kind of food, HR of Sainsburys use the 360 degree appraising method to check the performance of the employees. The sustainable competitive advantage is also depending on the performance of the employees. (Interview) Incentive Pay: Incentive pay also includes the HR practice this practice is very essential to motivate the staff, because motivated staff is a key of success as well as to achieve the sustainable competitive advantage to the organization. We can also say that it is a pay of performance. After checking the performance of the employees the organization HR gives pay of performance to them who performed very productivity to gain the sustainable competitive advantage as well as the strategic goals of the organization. The incentive pay could be in the form of bonuses, share, debenture etc. Tesco:- Tesco is the world 3rd largest retail company in the retail chain. The HR of tesco plays very vital role to achieve the strategic goals of the organization as well as to remain the tesco in the sustainable competitive advantage. Tesco HR gives the incentive pay to their staff after check the performance in the form of share and bonuses. (Interview) Training and Development: The main practice of HR is training and development of employees. Training is very important and vital for the employees because with the help of training HR tell to the employee regarding the job task etc. Training give the idea to the employee that when to do, how to do, a trained employee can perform their duty very efficiently which is very beneficial for the organization to achieve the strategic and continuously competitive advantage. This is possible with the help of HR training practice. Asda:- Asda is the American company but established in Britain. The HR of Asda is playing very essential role for the Asda to gain the sustainable competitive advantage in the UK as well as company strategic goals. The main role of HR in Asda is to train the staff according to the job. Asda has multi skills staffs. They can work anywhere, any place in the store. This is very helpful for Asda to reduce the staff cost as well as to achieve the competitive advantage. (Interview) Conclusion:- As the above discussion the role of HRM is very prominent when any changing in the external environmental factors. HRM try to adjust these factors with the internal factors and try that these factors does not affect the organization internal environment as well as today HR practices are very important for every organization to gain the sustainable competitive advantage, because HR plays very essential role in the hiring of the employees. If the employees of the organization are productive and innovative then the organization has sustainable competitive advantage, so the HR practices are the bon of the organization. B) Collective Bargaining:- Introduction:- Collective bargaining is a negotiation among the employees and employers it could be regarding wage, incentive, sack of the employees etc. The main purpose of collective bargaining is to remove the confliction or dispute among the employees and employers. In this bargaining employers on the one hand and employees on the other hand with their representative called union. In the collective bargaining union must has some collective interest since the negotiations which are the beneficial for the several employees as well as union charge their services from the employees. Union role is very vital in this negotiation, because union is representing the whole employees ideas, interest and their demand. Union do the bargain with the employer regarding new terms and condition of the employment. This negotiation and new agreement among the employers and employees is called collective bargaining agreement. Research on Collective Bargaining:- The research which has been done on the collective bargaining for 50 years says that collective bargaining point outs the cost of people behaviour which is the more important as compare to benefits, while planning the national collective bargaining structure to compete in international market. Many countries are giving special consideration for the welfare of the employees. Definition of Collective Bargaining:- The collective bargaining is the procedure of negotiation among the employees, employers and union. This negotiation is regarding the working terms and conditions between employees and employers as well as removes the confliction between both parties (Clegg, 1976) Collective Bargaining:- Collective bargaining when the worker union negotiate with the employer regarding the terms and condition of the employee is called collective bargaining like holidays, working hours, job rotation, employment security, wage etc. Collective Bargaining Agreement:- This is an agreement which is done as a result of negotiation or collective bargaining among the workers, union and employers regarding the wages, is called collective bargaining. Mostly employees terms and condition brings change in this agreement. This agreement is very beneficial for employees rather than the employers. Compensation Packages/Collective Bargaining Issues:- According to Robert L. Mathis (2007) Most of the times compensation packages are negotiated through collective bargaining, this is also known as collective bargaining issues which are given below. Working Conditions Pay/Wages Job Security Hours Fee Collection Pension Suspension Overtime Grievance Procedures Bonus Evaluation Medical Leaves Shifts of Timing Basic Pay Recalls Maternity Leaves Relaxation Periods Insurance Dismissals Paternity Leaves Overtime Charges Promotion Regular working hours Allowances Seniority Holiday Pay Incentive/Pay Performance These are the compensation packages or collective bargaining issues which are mostly negotiated through collective bargaining agreement. Working of Collective Bargaining:- The working of collective bargaining means that employers and union should have to agree on an action plan of collective bargaining E.G. Who is a representative of employees for negotiation? How many time, when and which place both parties will meet up for bargaining/discussion If more than one union is involved then how dialogue will be take place. In the bargaining how many employees are involved Which terms and condition is debateable in the bargaining? The bargaining will take place in the organization or outside the organization. (direct.gov.uk) Collective Bargaining In Good Faith:- The procedure of collective bargaining should be decided by using the positive thinking and best efforts. Both parties talk get-together and should have to consider all the suggestion of each others. In the bargaining if there is any standstill or any other matters both parties should have to carry on the negotiation until they reach an agreement. Both parties should have to give respect to the representative. In the bargaining do not try to talk with the people who is behind the scene. In the bargaining do not deflate the representative this may cause of deterioration of bargaining process. Both parties do not spoil the agreement by crossing its clauses and provision to employees not covered by that agreement. There is an authentic reason for an agreement that must have not any excuse. ( Kiely Thompson,  2007) Advantage to workers:- Collective bargaining gives the high self-esteem as well as productivity to the employees. The management cannot take any illogical action against the workers because collective bargaining restricts the management autonomy. The employees of the organization can easily bargain with the top level of management for their benefits and interests. It also gives the job protection to the employees. Disadvantage to Employees:- If any employee is not the member of union he pays union services. Probably it makes the division between employees and the management/employer. Advantage to Employers:- Collective bargaining is very important for the employers as well, because through it they can easily resolve the problems of the workers instead of individuals. It opens the communication channel between the employees and employers and employees can contribute in decision making. It also plays very essential role to resolve the confliction in the organization. Disadvantage to Employers:- The employers cannot force the employees The management freedom is restricted. The involvement of external body In collective bargaining the employers accept all the demands from the employees. Individual Bargaining:- The concept of individual bargaining is between employee and employer no union involve in this bargaining, in the individual bargaining the employer take more potency rather than the collective bargaining. According to Flanders the individual bargain (agreement) between the employer and the employee, and which is given legal status in the form of an employment contract, provides for an exchange of work for money.(1986) Mostly the individual bargaining is based on when any new contract is take place between employer and employee this contract can be organization new terms and conditions, wages and job timing, eventually in individual bargaining mostly employer is on benefit side as compare to collective bargaining. Examples of collective bargaining and individual bargaining:- Pakistan Tele Communication Limited(PTCL):- In 2006 PTCL workers union which is also known as PTCL announced the strike, the strike is based on that PTCL is reducing the staff as well as not increasing the wage and not increasing the pensions. The PTCL union president Choudhry Manzoor came with three demand which we discussed above. But the management of PTCL denied the three demands but after 15 days both parties announced the content of deal, after this deal the president of PTCL union Choudhry Manzoor took the strike back. This deal is known as collective bargaining agreement between PTCL management and PTCL workers union. In this agreement management of PTCL accepted the three demands.( telecompk.net) British Telecom (BT):- In the British telecom there was confliction regarding the wage between the BT worker union (CWU) and the management of the BT. the confliction started when the BT CEO Ian Livingstons took triple bonus in current year 2010 because of company performance financial recovery. The increased in bonus from  £343000 to  £1.2 M in current year and the total salary of CEO is from  £1.2M to  £2.1M as well as 2% also increased in basic salary which is mentioned in the BT annual financial report. The BT union (CWU) demanded 5% increase in pay and BT management offered only 2%. When the negotiation was not going to success the CWU gave the call of strike. It was happen after 23 years. Both parties at 9th July 2010 through collective bargaining agreement settled the pay rise of 3% until 2013. When both parties announced the content of deal the BT share were rise up 3p or 1.9% which was very good sign for BT. (Lilly Vitorovich) Underground Tube:- The agreement has been done between bosses of rail and transport and RMT union recently, which was regarding the job security of the employees as well as the rising in pay. Everyone knows that maintenance work is going some underground lines. The worker whos doing maintenance work called strike for 2days started from 14th July 2010. The RMT union has suspended the strike after the negotiation both sides have been settled a new agreement of rise the pay 4.2% as well as the guarantee of the job protection. This new agreement is also known as collective bargaining agreement. The unite union came as a representative of bus drivers and negotiated with the bosses of buses. The bosses of buses accepted the bus driver demand and both parties announced the content of deal is called collective bargaining agreement. Pakistan Ship Breaker Strike:- In the mid of June the 15000 ship breaker worker union which is known as Gadani ship breaking democratic workers union (GSBDWU) as well as affiliated with the national trade union federation (NTUF) announced the strike for 2days. The reason of strike was low wage, lack of working hours as well job protection. The negotiation is being held between the owner of the association and union. But the owner denied all the demands of the unions. The union once again called the strike on 5th July until our demand will not be accepted. The owner and union again negotiated. The owner accepted the whole demand and both parties are settled on an agreement. British Airways (B.A):- The confliction between cabin crew works union which is known as unite and B.A since last 14 months. The confliction between two parties started, when B.A cut off the cabin crew workers to reduce its expenditure. This situation was worst when B.A staff went on strike. The B.A took the disciplinary action as well as sacked the many workers whos are the member of unite union. B.A offered on 25th June 2010 was 2.9% rise next year and after year 3%. But the union did not accept this offer and also gave new date of strike which is in September 2010. Due to this reason B.A shares value day by day are going down in to the market. (bbc.co.uk/news/business-10695976) Iris Trading Company:- In April 2008 the iris trading company worker union which is name is PWU announced the strike. The reason for strike was very low wages and timing. 7% increase in basic salary of every worker. This was the demand from the union. The union announced strike for 4 days strike on 6th May 2008. The owner of the company Rizwan Hameed and PWU union leader Asif Ghori negotiated and settled the agreement of 5% rise of basic salary of every worker. After this agreement PWU union leader suspended the strike. (Personal Experience) Bangladesh River Worker:- At 16th May 2010, the Government Minster of Dhaka signed an agreement with the leader of union. After this agreement the union leader Ashikul Islam said call of the strike. The demand was from the union leader which the Government Minster agreed was remove all the criminal cases and realise the entire worker. Increase the pay scale 50% to 100%, bonuses for all workers, BOSS Plastic Company strike:- In Pakistan many companies do individual bargaining when we go for job regarding the pay, working hours, bonuses, holidays etc. BOSS is a company which make the plastic furniture. Every employee of BOSS has individual and separate agreement which is mostly done according to the owner desires. In this agreement no union is involved all the terms and conditions set the employers. The agreement which is done without the involvement of union is called individual bargaining agreement. BBC:- In April 2010 BBC offered increase in pay  £300 to the Bectu. The union of its IT worker welcome this offered and cancelled the industrial action (Karl Flinders, 2010) Royal Dutch Shell:- The steel worker united union said that they reached a tentative agreement with the Royal Dutch Shell, this move avert the possible strike and handle the U.S crude oil refining capacity. The union announced that new pack become standard wage, benefits for the workers and good working condition for all 3000 refinery workers whos are the member of union as well as working in U.S (Steve Gelsi, 2009) Royal Mail:- In March 2010 there is an agreement signed between Royal mail and its union worker to finish the long term conflict/ dispute which was job cut and over pay, regarding the new agreement there was rise 7% in the workers wage. Both parties are very happy on the deal. (Christopher Hope and Harry Wallop, 2010) Lindsey Oil Refinery (LOR):- There were dispute in Lindsey Oil Refinery and its worker after very lengthy negotiation. The LOR agreed to reinstatement of 650 worker sacked during the strike as well as the union also ensure that which took an industrial action LOR will not take any action against all those workers, (telegraph.co.uk) Agree or Disagree:- As the above examples it is very clear that when there was any confliction among the employers and employees then this dispute was solve with the help of collective bargaining, the reason of dispute among the employers and employees always in the term of increase in pay, sacking, employment security and incentive pay. The life of Kate Chopin      Ã‚  Ã‚   Kate Chopin led a fascinating life filled with times of triumph but also times of great loss. Living in the South during the post-Civil War era, the setting and experiences of her life would have a great impact on the subjects of her writing. Chopin began writing as a way to express her frustration with life. This is why her emotions about life are conveyed so strongly in her writing. One of her short stories, "Juanita," is an excellent example of how Chopin's life affected her writing.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The story of "Juanita" is that of a young woman who, though not incredibly beautiful, had many admirers. The people of her small town gossiped continually about which man she would marry. Would it be the man who had traveled all the way from the city for the sole purpose of seeing her? The loss of all the males in her life, according to Hoffman, led to the intense female relationships she shared with her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Logic: An Empirical Study of A Priori Truths ABSTRACT: I distinguish a priori knowledge from a priori truths or statements. A priori knowledge either is evident or is derived from evident premisses by means of correct reasoning. An a priori statement is one that reflects features of the conceptual framework within which it is placed. The statement either describes semantic relations between concepts of the framework or it characterizes the application of the framework to experience and the world. An a priori statement is not necessarily part of anyone’s a priori knowledge. I also distinguish empirical knowledge from empirical statements. Both statements and theories are empirical if they are designed to characterize features of experience and the world. Knowledge is empirical if it fits experience; thus, one must check to see whether it fits. We do not obtain knowledge of logical systems by rational insight of evident truths and careful deductions from evident truths. Adequate logical systems are developed by trial and e rror. Logical knowledge is empirical knowledge that is not generally a priori. It is empirical knowledge of (some) a priori truths and principles of our conceptual systems. Logical systems are empirical theories of these truths and principles. 1. A Priori Knowledge and A Priori Truths In reflecting on our knowledge of logic, I was puzzled because logical knowledge seems to have incompatible characteristics. This knowledge has some claim to a priori status, but logical systems are also developed and "tried out" to capture linguistic practice. Can an a priori body of knowledge have an empirical character? To answer this, we must consider what it is to be a priori. A priori knowledge has traditionally been conceived to be the product of insight and reasoning. Some truths are simply evident to someone who understands them and reflects on them. These truths are known to be such without being checked in experience. Other a priori knowledge is inferred by evidently correct reasoning (this is deductively correct reasoning) which begins from a priori knowledge. That a priori knowledge which is not evident must be obtained by chains of reasoning which ultimately begin with evident premisses. A priori knowledge is the knowledge which Hume claimed to be "either intuitively or demonstratively certain." (An Inquiry Concerning Human Understanding) It isn’t clear what there is about the objects of a priori knowledge that makes a priori knowledge possible. If we have a faculty of rational insight, on what does it "operate"?

Elie Wiesel’s “Night” and Roberto Benigni’s “ Life is Beautiful” Analysis

In both Elie Wiesel’s â€Å"Night† and Roberto Benigni's â€Å" Life is Beautiful† the element of  chance played a major role in the outcome of each character. It impacts the paths of each  family in negative and positive way’s. Throughout each family’s time in the concentration  camps they are so heavily influenced by greed, anger and corruption that without the role of  chance, hope and love surviving would have been impossible. With displays of unknowingly  running from the enemy to randomly being selected by the enemy, chance changes their  lives forever.In the beginning of Life Is Beautiful Guido’s son Giosue refuses to take a bath for his  mother. This later turns out to be a positive impact of chance on this little boy. In the  concentration camp Giosue is asked to strip and take a shower which would have actually  been a gas shower intending to kill him.Instead he runs off and hides and does not get into  that show er. Similarly in the book Night, Eliezer's father is selected to be killed because  of his emaciated and malnourished body in the Buna labour camp. Luckily there was a  second selection among the condemned which allowed him to go back to the barracks.  Both of these examples portray a positive outcome of chance that lead to their success in  the camps.When The Germans received new’s of the Russians advancing into the Buna camp they  started killing everyone. At this point in the book Eliezer is in the infirmary due to a foot  injury. When the Russians got even closer the entire camp was evacuated and most were slaughtered.In fear of being killed Eliezer and his father joined the evacuation even though ELiezer was still hurt. Little did they know that if they had stayed in the infirmary they would have been rescued by the russians day’s later. This negative impact of chance prevented Eliezer’s father from surviving the holocaust.

Of Mice and Men †Importance of Dreams Essay

Dreams are an ingrained part of our lives, and those who strive to achieve them show extraordinary devotion and resolve. The allure of a brighter future, of a better life, can both benefit and harm, as John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men illustrates. Living in a time of pain and loss, the characters in the novella cling to their dreams. However, these dreams are beyond attainment, of no importance for accomplishment, and bring them nothing but regret. This essay will demonstrate how hopes and dreams are unimportant for success and happiness, as they are unachievable and bring only pain. Firstly, the pursuit of dreams is futile, as they cannot be achieved. The dream that the two protagonists, George and Lennie, harbour recurs throughout the novel. Their dream is to one day own their own property and to become self-sufficient, and the realization of this dream becomes more likely as the novel nears its climax. However, the dream shatters with the death of Lennie, devastating George, as George cannot envisage the dream without Lennie. The dreams of the other characters, such as Candy and Crooks, are also shown to be beyond realization. Candy, knowing that he is soon to outlive his usefulness, hopes that he can come and live with George and Lennie and to have the freedom to work or rest as he pleases. However, this also is broken when Lennie dies. The black stable-hand Crooks is the only character that clearly understands the futility of dreams. â€Å"I seen hundreds of men come by on the road an’ on the ranches. . . every damn one of ’em’s got a little piece of land in his head. An’ never a God damn one of ’em ever gets it. Just like heaven†¦ Nobody never gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land.†(Crooks, Chapter 4) Crooks dreams of being equal to the other workers, but he understands that he is not considered equal. He briefly joins the dream that George and Lennie have, but withdraws his offer to help on the farm when he accepts that dreams are not possible: the freedom and happiness that they wish for is not found in the world they live in. The impossibility of achieving dreams makes them unimportant; they remain unfulfilled, leaving the holder with nothing. Secondly, when unfulfilled, dreams cause regret and misery. The unfulfilled dream of Curley’s wife’s has left her discontent, and she lives a lonely life with her inattentive husband. Her dream was to escape from her oppressive mother and become an actor. â€Å"‘A show come through, an’ I met one of the actors. He says I could go with the show. But my ol’ lady wouldn’ let me†¦If I’d went, I wouldn’t be livin’ like this, you bet.'† (Curley’s wife, Chapter 5) Because of her mother, Curley’s wife was never able to achieve her dream, just like the other characters, leaving her only with the knowledge that she could have had a better life. Her attitude and manner around the ranch evidences this. Her bitterness and attempts to draw attention from the other men, simply so she can have some companionship, are clear indicators of her dissatisfaction and loneliness. Curley’s wife is an example of dreams leaving the holder with regret when unfulfilled, and of how they are not important for success. Lastly, without dreams, people can still be successful and satisfied. The ranch’s skinner, Slim, is described as a highly skilled and content man, and as â€Å"the prince of the ranch.† He moved with a majesty only achieved by royalty and master craftsmen†¦ his authority was so great that his word was taken on any subject, be it politics or love. (Chapter 2, Of Mice and Men) However, while the other characters have dreams, Slim appears to have none. He never mentions any of his own, but rather supports others with theirs. It is demonstrated that he does not want anything outside of what he has, and that he has not created any plans. Whether it is because he, like Crooks, understands the futility of dreams, or because he is simply satisfied with his place in life, Slim does not possess them, and despite of this, he has the highest status among the workers. He stands as the primary example of how dreams are not required for somebody to be successful. In conclusion, it can be seen that dreams are not important. Not only do dreams leave those who keep them with unhappiness, such as with Curley’s wife, but they also cannot be achieved due to the cruel nature of fate, leaving them unfulfilled. These dreams, whether they are fulfilled or not, are shown to be unnecessary for contentment, as evidenced by Slim, the most successful worker. Ultimately, the nature of dreams is best illustrated by the poem from which the novel draws its name. The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men Gang aft agley, An’ lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain For promis’d joy. (Robert Burns, To a Mouse) As it has been shown, dreams are not important; they are beyond reach, offer nothing, and bring only unhappiness to those who keep them, whether they are accomplished or not.

Human Population and Population Growth

In early years human population and population growth has not been an issue. This is because of the variety of different environmental factors. Sickness and disease has played a large role in keeping human population under control since the beginning of time. It seemed that when a population would get over crowded an epidemic such as, the influenza or small pox would break out. This would drastically decrease the population enough that it would be under control again. Famine is another great controller of population. When a famine strikes an area only the few with enough food will be able to reproduce or even survive. An examination of world population control would not be complete with out including war. War also performs wonders at controlling population by murdering most men of child rearing age. In today†s day and age, with our current technology increases disease outbreak and famine (except in some 3rd world countries) is not much of a factor any more. War is not considered a valid population control method due to today†s â€Å"new† wars. Without the three largest population controllers much of a factor any more, population is free to run out of control. This provides us with an ever-increasing controversy; this is whether government or society should dictate family size. I believe that society can infringe indirect controls over family size, but these are considered more community norms as opposed to hard fast rules such as governments can set. Two examples will follow. First, we will look at our society. Yes, the USA†s turn to no child and one-child families. This was caused by society. Society pushes Americans to have successful careers both male and female. There has been a switch from families to careers. This does not providing Americans with the time or means for multiple children, but cutting the number down to one or none. Another example of society's control is the push in some Asian/Middle Eastern countries for a family†s first child to be male. Even when there is no government regulation many cultures push for your first child to be male. This forces families to abort females and even murder them once they have been born. Once again this is a society/cultural push not a mandated rule. These instances are what different societies have created for themselves, when included in one of these societies it is hard to say whether it is right or wrong. I will first address the aspect that government should not control family size. First of all, it is a natural and religious right to produce offspring. Breed, multiply and populate has been the belief since the beginning of time. The idea is to grow population so that our beliefs and way of life may be spread and passed on. Who is government to take these right away? Governmental control over family size goes against everything that the USA stands for. This would be an age-old idea called freedom. When a government starts dictating the kind and size of family a person can have. Almost all freedom is lost. Another topic briefly addressed above is the aborting and murdering of babies that aren†t male. A first hand example of this is China. China regulates or gives incentives to families that only produce one child. This is where the problem begins because most families want this child to be male. Male children are providers and will go out and join the working world. They will be â€Å"successful†. Many female babies are aborted once sex is determined. If sex is not determined before birth, once born many female babies are abandoned or destroyed. This showing the cruelty that government controlled family size will push people to. Government should control family size because in most instances the general population cannot handle this for themselves. A prime example of this is our already over crowded inner cities. People with chemical addictions and no financial means are cranking out babies right and left. They have no means of providing for all of these children. Government currently provides for these under privileged children, that as cruel as it sounds, should not have been born. I have had a first hand example of this problem. A family friend in another state has adopted three crack babies from the same mother; this mother is also on welfare. This certain mother is by no means an exception. China is another example of why government needs to control population. Look at the current problems that they are faced with because in previous years they have done nothing. Left uncontrolled, population will snowball out of control. Government needs to be aware of the ever -increasing population growth problem. I believe that rather that mandating how many children a family can have. They should educate its population on different means of birth control and possibly start providing for free. Especially in this country a harsher penalties needs to be imposed for chemical dependent mothers that become baby factories. An education/management plan can be imposed allowing individuals the freedom to determine the number of children they desire to have.

Effects of Lottery to the Respondent’s Economic Status Most of the enumerated effects listed by the respondents were affects the budget of the family resulting to the increase of allotted budget; affects the family relationship due to additional burden brought by playing lotto; intentional use of budget allotted to the children’s needs, and; highly emphasized fall of economic status.Relationship of Respondents bet to their Employment Status Employed versus unemployed status of the respondents established outstanding relationship with their bet. Eleven (11) or 73. 3% were employed thus give there usual or bigger bet compared to four (4) or 26. 6% unemployed. Usual Lotto players between employed and unemployed Employed respondents were the major lotto player since they have the means to gamble as compared to unemployed respondents. Advantages and Disadvantages Most of the respondents believed that playing lotto can only give hope of becoming rich through winning the jackpot prize.Most likely playing lotto was disad vantages: fall of their economic status; family budget/allocation suffered; unwise use of the money; becoming unproductive citizen; lead to addiction thus committing unacceptable actions due to gambling 7. Conclusions 1. Since majority of the respondents were married and female, they invest their future through playing lotto hoping to win the jackpot prize. 2. Since most of the respondents were employed, they have the high tendency of playing lotto because of their source of money as well as the tendency to put the biggest bet. . Since the respondents feels the negative effects of playing lotto in their economic status they would probably limit or refrained from playing lotto. 4. Since lotto playing was disadvantageous, the respondents surely realized its implication to their family as well as to the community. 8. Recommendations 1. Instead of investing family’s future through the chance of luck, find a real and long-term job that will secure your future, better to gain the v alue of worth rather than relying on your chance. 2.Lotto fanatics should not rely much on winning since it is computer operated this east to manipulate. 3. Employed lotto players should not give their biggest bet although they gave the means or source to gamble. 4. Male use/spend family’s budget wisely instead of gambling in lotto. 5.
